It's scary, this whole love thing.

Right below the skin on which you place kisses lingers a constant sorrow.
Resembling residual dread upon grieving the un-encountered.
Your love feels unreal. How do I, convince me— ME?!
That I should live in the now?

I try it…
Look for five, touch four, yada yada-
all whilst enveloped in your arms, with my eyes shut tight.

That this, right here
is home; in a way I never thought I’d know.

What reeked of love— push and pull. fights and screaming. arguments and deafening silences.
Seems to have vanished. Overpowered with the fragrance of your might.

In the wake of your love, I try count three things I can hear, two I can smell…
But is that even how it goes?

I’m left unsure of everything I’ve ever known.
Accustomed to your help, my weight which you support.

Unusual my lack of control, the mass I lent you
still pulls on me like a phantom limb but it’s not just mine anymore.

How can I love you so much that it hurts to look into your eyes
knowing the atrocities to which I can lose you?

Being with you feels sinful. An undeserved casting.
I never moved worlds, never saved anyone to have landed the role of the One, for you.

Neither me, nor you.

Illustration from @littleguns_ on X

For Isla Bell

I walked the same roads as you
crossed the same paths but
in the end, only one of us gets to keep walking.
What made me live and you not?
Sheer luck.
And that’s what we have to depend on
that’s what we have to wish upon.
To be able to breathe.

What makes my actions lead to nothing more
than a mildly concerning story and hers to an obituary?

Everything I read or hear about this I think to myself…
What’s the difference between me and her and her actions and mine
I’ve met people like the ones she encountered and was perhaps just as close
to ending up like she
So why did it happen to her and not to me?

What makes me different? What makes her so easy to be taken away?
Why do I even have to be in a position where I wonder why her and not me?

Isla Bell was a missing woman for a large part of 2024. In October/ November 2024, they found her remains. She had been murdered. The reporting on her case is difficult to read as it insinuates and blames Isla somewhat for what happened. It’s unacceptable. It’s painful. But it’s a narrative we’ve read and heard over and over. All I know now is that I wish nothing but torment upon the men who did this to her and those everywhere who have destroyed/are destroying/continue to destroy the lives of women. And I extend it further to those who destroy them even in their deaths.

Treasure // Palindrome

Treasure

X-marked treasure - home to secrets,
resides underneath.
Beginnings of mystery,
answering prayers.
Unveiling the purpose of me.

Me, of purpose?
The unveiling prayers answering mystery of beginnings
Underneath resides secrets to home
Treasure marked-X.

* The first stanza of this poem speaks of locating answers to personal identity and purpose, which are rooted in the idea of a ‘home country’. The metaphorical treasure stands in for the lost or buried cultural practices and traditions that’ve been erased by colonisation (of India, my home country). The stanza thus speaks of locating this treasure, in order to achieve a clearer, more concrete understanding of my identity, to feel connected to my roots and to find my purpose.

The second stanza then speaks of my identity, after having located this metaphorical treasure and recognising that my purpose is indeed embedded in my culture and traditional practices. The unearthing of this treasure works to understand that my home country, similar to my understanding of my identity and purpose were never erased, simply buried. And like treasure, are valuable and rich.

FEMine

FEMine

phantom child, unearthly white
fallen amid worldly cries
grievous composition bound by [dis]ease
inevitable departure
famine of 1890

predictable fault in judgement —
the arrival of maternal instinct

the shape of a woman
appearing to relieve
plants instead, a kiss of death seed

* Ekphrastic poem in response to Homeless (1890) by Thomas Benjamin Kennington

The painting speaks of destitution and impoverishment amongst women and children in 1890s London. It depicts a widow supporting a young boy’s body who is close to death. However, the poem frames the female subject as aiding the boy by relieving him of life, as she plants the ‘kiss of death', upon his forehead. This alternative reading of the painting portrays women, not as nurturing or maternal, as society deems them to be, instead playing the role by performing a mercy killing.

Villanelle : A Stranger's Home

A Stranger's Home

gloomy winter mornings, like a stranger’s home
quivering, shivering, this heart’s a frosty globe
thumping against my chest, a reminder I’m all alone

no one here to listen to my moans and groan
to hear me complain, despite the scarf around my earlobes
gloomy winter mornings, like a stranger’s home

will it ever simmer down? or will this feeling be forever unknown?
I think, some bourbon right now would be pretty dope...
thumping against my chest, a reminder I’m all alone

looking for a way back, there’s no reception on the phone
failing to locate anyone nearby, perhaps it’s best to lose hope
gloomy winter mornings, like a stranger’s home

this fog, the brisk mist, I feel it in my bones
no one to hold on to, it’s up to me to be able to cope
thumping against my chest, a reminder I’m all alone

such loneliness... in it, must I roam?
to stop and wait? that idea screams nope!
gloomy winter mornings, like a stranger’s home
thumping against my chest, a reminder I’m all alone

*This villanelle comprises nineteen lines- five stanzas of three lines each and one closing stanza of four lines. It follows an ABA, ABA, ABA, ABA, ABA, ABAA rhyme scheme with line 1 repeating in lines 6, 12, and 18 and line 3 repeating in lines 9, 15, and 19. It speaks of winter, and its tendency to make you feel alone, comparable to being in a stranger’s home, tapping into humour as the protagonist ‘goes mad’ amongst the descending temperature.

Not Inept

I reside in the space between
adjusting and nomadic

Existing within liminality
laced with transcendence

Floating above consciousness
yet close enough to form shadows

Each waking day I worry,
my eyes will shut close

Unknowing of my place in the world
loosened grip on the pen

Enclosed and enveloped
in wrath, at the sake of my ept.

Mime, mine.

I cannot say what I want to say
and that holds me back

I cannot express all the thoughts in my head

my mouth is bound by a clasp

I cannot scream at the top of my lungs

spew out all the hatred from my blood

I cannot even scribe my emotions
that’s just not how it works

My fingertips feel as though
they’ve been hammered down

Paralysing me

stripping me of the only thing

That has kept me alive for all this time

altering my identity to a mime

I worry I cannot hold onto this any longer

the noise within is deafening

But the problem lies outside

as the tape holding my mouth shut tight

Reflects the silence

onto the other side

Now the only place my thoughts

emotions and feelings reside

Lay beside

one other in darkness

Never to be known
and me, to forever be alone

Made Us

histories that shape me,
emotions that make me,
aren’t we just lingering collisions of our past?

uncovering what i envelop, unveiling a part of you,
the warmth that once rested in me,
through time

formed you.

i wonder, i ponder
why i’m reminded of home at your sight

only to realise that with time,
i recognise your soul,
as mine.

that in our past lives,
before the diamonds, the shine
you and i existed, parallel
and shared fragments that now,
reside in your eyes

although you don’t remember,
and they’ll call me strange forever,

knowing you’ll never encounter,

in this life,

i’ll wait till next time,

for you to realise

the histories that shape us,

the emotions that make us.

Perth of the Past

The other day I took Kimchi, on a walk. We always go to the same place, a small park behind my house. Theres usually a few other dogs and their owners there, however we ended up going a bit later than when we'd normally go and so it was empty. The world seemed gloomier in that moment, like it had been through the VSCO app, made to seem eerie. All I could think about was how familiar the colours around me, the emptiness, the way in which the trees swayed so gently as I sat on the swing, seemed and how it was all too reminiscent of the movie Palo Alto.

2-3 years ago I was very into movies. I went through a phase where I'd watch a movie or two a day and they were always quite obscure films. I can't really  describe what I mean without giving a few more examples, so I think 'The Dressmaker', 'Little Children' and 'Like Minds', are a few if you wanted to google them, would sort of circumference my taste. All these movies are set in small isolated towns, where nothing much ever happens. I guess 'indie' is one way to put it, but they always evoked a sense of nostalgia (?) in me. Quiet places that aren't that well known, where nothing much happens and where although you came across the same few people every other day due to proximity, you couldn't really call them friends.
Perhaps watching these movies made me feel as if I could relate to the characters and their ordinary lives as we had somewhat of a similar setting.

Rhinoceros Beetle by Susan Hawthorne, one of best short stories I've come across ever, also illustrates a similar aura in which it's set, one comparable to Palo Alto's, and therefore Perth's, in my mind.

Much of my late teens was spent trying to compare the amount of fun I had, or the amount of crazy stuff I did, to those I saw on screen or to those around me in the way they portrayed themselves on social media. The idea of romanticising your own life, in a way, kept me going. Although, yes it was toxic at times to feel a sense of FOMO based on the lives inaccurately portrayed through staged characters or personas, I convinced myself that I couldn't let my life be a bore. Perhaps this 'coming of age' and 'indie small town' movie genre was the closest I could come to, to see a portrayal of my on screen because it didn't seem unachievable.

Palo Alto was the closest on screen representation to Perth that I had come across, not because of the plot line or the personalities of the characters but because of extraneous factors and bleak similarities in the age of the protagonist and the portrayal of high school through the eyes of someone who didn't see it for what it actually was. The movie dramatised the teenage life with tones of warm overlayed and music that you'd only come across if you specifically searched for nostalgic instrumentals and shuffled through the playlist a few dozen times. It wasn't the movie that reminded me of my past, it was how I perceived myself as a side character in the film as it seemed so easy to do so when the setting was familiar and I had a tendency to find answers in mediums of art that were made with no intentions of doing so.

So when I was sat on those swings on that empty, gloomy day. I made a short list of places and things that made Perth seems Palo Alto-y to me, Pertho Alto perhaps (?)....

She sighs , she seeks

from a time unknown
one we'll never seek
the peace they hold
didn't come at ease

the wind, the sun;
against pillowy cheeks

so much to comprehend,
beyond this celestial being

sigh, she rests,
after several weeks

hopes to find herself,
amongst misty dreams

it's here we realise
our true place
and how small we really seem

and in that moment
with the diamonds above her head
and the grain beneath her feet

she forgives herself
for the wait,
and falls to her knees

10 July, 2019

Is it what it seems?

'a long way to go'
'a difficult fight to fight'
what really makes our perception of time?

seems like a while?
worth less than a dime

you aren't seeing it
as if it's mine

length and power
distance and path

what is really in our control?

is that purple really what you see?
or maybe it's black...
perhaps even gold.

anger at its brim
but you have control

do you want to boil
or let the city un-see such roar?

time equals pennies
but only if you chime

why play a game of chess
when you can make
the blocks of silver and grey
your path in life?

Piece of Perth

a sense of home
away from your own

frost of the unknown
fading away
along with superficial touch

the warmth of your friendship,
your heart
our souls

suburbia resides
in your palms

we're intertwined
our spirits,
aligned

feelings of things as mine
remained foreign
until i was blessed with a friendship
so fine

not always on the same page,
but it's better this way,
being ahead -
helps the other find the way

tears of comfort
mixed with pain
i'm ensured
in you, i can have faith

you might not see it this way
perhaps i'm making it much deeper

and i'll admit in some sense
it's due to vain

but our paths crossed over
and we were given this chance to grow together

so regardless of the future,
i'll hold this moment,
my emotions,
this feeling in,
forever

Carved

carved by your hunger
learnt to fear patience

how do I trust any,
when I've been held without my right
by so many?

trembling, my skin
insulting the injured

wrote out the story for myself,
but still a surprise
with each and every step

dug deep down
to capture my heart
 it punctured my soul instead

convinced myself to
frame the pain
it’s nothing to be ashamed

fill the carving with remorse
or better,
use it for fame

I suppose it's all forgiven
if you make sure to never be forgotten

twist the thoughts
make yourself remember
the sniffle, the sobs

 you and I
along with limited days

you had convinced yourself
that nothing truly holds weight

was easy to say
but I hoped for so long,
longed for your stay

presence, touch, memories
and such
left behind the sorrow
the pain

with these cuts and carving...
all I have now are those
with whom I share these saying

I thought

Rewind the short hand
by a couple million times

Undo the pressure
try not to mind

Trails, not ones walked on
wish to say “I forgot”

No reason
No cause

But the pleasure is mine,
like always
Oh, of course

‘Superficial’ was said
Over and over, it played

Was meant to help?
Now, unable to fade

Fast forward the short hand
Now just by a few times

Streams of ruby,
never too many

Aqua toes
veils the dysmorphic glow

Desires not reality.
In your head,
you've made them your profanity

Just let me loose
Too often now
in child's pose

Another pill
 Stained will

I crave sanity,
never even got to kiss it goodbye.
